Saying “I Love You”

To all those who are secretly madly in love; to those at risk for falling head over heels; to the ones who wonder how “I love you” would sound in the ears of another person…

Don’t actually say “I love you”. Wait.

Just you fucking wait.

Wait until you can’t bear it anymore, until that precise moment when the words want to come bursting out from your mouth and take a plunge off the tip of your tongue. Wait until all the butterflies and all the wishful thinking and all the hopeful prayers that have been building up inside of you have no other option but to hide themselves behind your every spoken word and steal away alongside your every exhalation. Wait until all the “I miss you’s” and the “I like you’s” and the “I want you’s” have all run their course, when you need to say something more potent, more authentic to the person that your heart desires. Then when the moment comes when you can look her in the face and gaze into her eyes and you can see your bright, bright future reflecting off the windows of her soul…

Bite your fucking tongue.

Cause “I love you”, when you really think about it, it’s a goddamn dangerous thing to say. You can change an entire person’s life with those three simple words. Turn them into a dumb-struck, love-sick puppy, or an overzealous facebook-stalker, or even a malicious, man-hating devourer of hearts. You can lift them up to the top of the world or bring them crashing down to their knees. Inspire them to do the most courageous and honorable deeds or commit the most vile and heinous acts.

You should never get comfortable with the phrase “I love you”. Never say it just to say it, just because there’s nothing else to say. Never use it to get out of trouble or as a last defense when you’re losing an argument. Love should never be treated as an alibi, should never be used as an excuse, should never exist as an effortless convenience. And don’t you ever dare say it “just because”.

Cause for the love of all things good and worthwhile, if you ever do feel the urge to let those eight little letters escape from your lips, you better friggin’ mean it. They should feel like warm bullets spraying from the muzzle of your mouth. They should make your knees buckle, like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your back. They should break and fall apart every time you casually misuse them, like they’re something that can never be gotten back again. These words need to be said as if they’re dangerous, they’re substantial, they’re fragile. You need to be able to feel these words as much as you say them.

So when the moment comes again when she’s standing in your arms and wrapped lovingly against your body and you let the sweet, sweet scent of her hair fill your lungs…

…when the only thing truly left to say is ”I love you”…

Well, you better fucking mean it.
