There was once a high school couple that was known for being the “perfect pair”. Just like any other high school relationship, they had their share of disagreements, struggle, etc. They never lost respect nor trust in each other to not have time or wanted to be together. They found ways to balance everything out: time for family, friends, and school.
Entering senior year, they were together for a little over four years. Every first Monday of the month, the boy would pick a flower from his garden for her on his way to school. She would wait for him under the school’s oak tree and he never failed to make her smile by: handing her the flower, saying a cheesy line, and giving her a peak on the cheek. She would walk him to his first class and then they would go on with their normal day. Occasional during lunch, they would notice stares from their classmates but it never bothered them. Friends accepted them, others hated them, and a few were inspired by them.
One day, as the boy was walking to school he found that his girlfriend wasn’t under the oak tree. So he called her and there was no answer. He looked for her around school, thinking that she must have forgotten her phone at home. The school bell rang so he went to class. Later that day, he received a text from her apologizing that she didn’t wait under the oak tree because she was not feeling well. A whole week of being sick, she finally found the strength to come back to school. When the boy saw her, he knew something was wrong. He gathered enough courage to ask her but he could tell she was not giving an honest answer. Days went by and he could not help but wonder what was wrong with her.
Undoubtedly the situation was growing. Conversations were getting dull, she spaced out more often, and the genuine smile I craved to get from her no longer existed. It was though she was trying to hold something in for a long time and was bound to break sooner or later. It was getting worse; she wasn’t waiting for him at the oak tree or can even look him straight in the eyes. The boy couldn’t take it anymore and had to ask if she was talking to another guy. She took a deep breath and asked him how much he loved her. He responded with such passion and confident they both knew how much he loved her. She said “I want to test our love”, the boy looked confused but listened anyways. She said, “I want us to go a whole week without seeing or talking to each other.” He saw it was nothing too serious because he would do anything for her, so he agreed to take this challenge.
The week started off well as he was trying to keep himself occupied. However, he couldn’t help himself not knowing how she was doing. Occasionally, he would ask her friends how she was and if she needs anything. Three nights later, he finally realized what this test really meant. It made him realizes how much he wants to see her and be with her. But he refuses to fail this test if this would be the only thing to prove to her how much she meant to him. The next day he catches her during passing period and they smiled at each other. Just from that smile he knew there couldn’t be another guy. So he planned to surprise her on the seventh day by dropping off food at her house.
Finally, the week was over and he went out and got her favorite dessert and movie. When he got to her house, he could hear someone crying. He rang the doorbell and her mom opened the door and gave him a big hug. He didn’t know what to do, she said she was sorry and to go to her room. He walked pass her dad and two younger siblings that were crying. He walked into her room to wasn’t there. Nothing but an envelope on the bed with his name on it was the only thing she left behind. Inside the envelope was a hand written twelve page letter about their relationship. As he was finish reading the last paragraph, his heart stopped beating for a second. It said “I lied to you about the test, it wasn’t to test our love. It was so you can get used to not seeing or talking to me. I didn’t know how to tell you but I have recently found out I have cancer and have seven days to live. If you are reading this then I know just how much you love me. You were the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I love you.”
